New immigration system to be installed

Fiji will soon be on par with the rest of the world in Immigration Services and Boarder Security with the installation of the Integrated Border Management System.

The Immigration Department has already identified a successful tender to carry out the installation within their system, which costs around $1.5 million.

Immigration director Major Nemani Vuniwaqa said Internet Fiji would begin work on their capital project early next year.

"Internet Fiji is the successful bidder and we are currently drawing up the contract before they begin working," Major Vuniwaqa said.

Internet Fiji had also done similar works in some islands in the Pacific but their work for Fiji will be more advanced.

"For their previous work, they have installed 3 modules but Fiji's IBMS will see a total of 17 modules," Major Vuniwaqa said.

"This will only improve the efficiency at work," he added.

He said the IBMS should integrate with digital and biometric passport systems compatible with International Civil Organisation (ICAO) standards to enhance the level of security at our borders.

It will also be compatible with Advanced Passenger Information System and Advanced Passenger Processing applications that will advance passenger list while conducting watch listing processing.

"We will also be equipped with scanners, which are of international standards and will help us detect fraudulent or tampered with travel documents," Major Vuniwaqa added.

Currently every documentation and filing are done manually.

The new IBMS system, he said, will detect all fraudulent activities or bring it to a negligible level.
